The Plan

The plan has been under development since early 2009. Here are the process used and results that we've achieved together so far.

1. Create a Project Timeline

A Project Timeline (pdf 100Kb) was submitted to Council.

2. Create a Work Plan

A Work Plan (pdf 1Mb) was submitted to Council that outlined the following steps.

3. Invite Community Members to form a Vision Committee

The Vision Committee (also known as a Citizens' Advisory Group or CAG) was formed. This is a group of dedicated volunteers that is guiding the process.

4. Adopt Sustainability Principles

The vision committee identified and adopted sustainability principles (pdf 300Kb) and action areas for the process.

5. Gather Community Input and Craft a Vision

A survey was completed by 240 residents and the results tabulated. From this the Vision Committee crafted a vision. More-->

6. Communicate and Celebrate the Vision

The Vision Committee hosted the Vision Celebration on August 27 at the Community Centre where the Vision was presented and attendees volunteered to be part of action groups to make it a reality.

7. Form Action Groups for the Four Action Areas and conduct Action Group Process.

The Action Group Process (100Kb pdf) is currently underway.

10. Plan Implementation

Use existing organizations, structures and processes to implement the plan where possible. Create new structures, processes and organizations where necessary.

Who Will Use It?

The plan will not only be used by our Town Council, but also by a wide variety of businesses, schools, organizations and individual citizens across the community.  The plan is meant to be a long term plan that successive councils will use for guidance. The Crossfield Sustainability Plan will connect us all, helping to build individual and collective success.

What is sustainability all about?desc2

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

“Our Common Future”
United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987

When we talk about sustainability during the Crossfield Sustainability Plan process, we’ll focus on our own three-part definition:

  • Think long term.  This will allow us to get creative, think about big, long-term trends and help us think about how people in Crossfield will be able to live here in the future.
  • Look at the whole.  We want to look at all elements of life in Crossfield – how we build our community, our economy, our culture, how we govern ourselves, our natural environment and how we connect and support one another.
  • See the connections.  Things that happen in Crossfield are connected.  Understanding these connections will help us meet our needs as a community now and in the future.
